| Coming Soon | John Leglar Stone Sculpture John Leglar was born in Dubuque, Iowa on January 24, 1971. I have been working with a variety of mediums since childhood. At age 20 I began carving stone. Trained as a sculptor with a degree from the University of Northern Iowa, I began working on large-scale commissions and architectural carvings. I received my first commission at age 24 for an installation at George Wyth State Park. The need to perfect my skill and fully understand the medium led me to work at a limestone quarry where I carved sample rosettes for the Iowa State Capital Renovation Project. In 1996, I moved to the west coast and continued to build my knowledge and experience by carving and installing granite monuments and large-scale architectural stone on private homes and institutional buildings. My work has taken me to China, Morocco, France and across the United States and has allowed me to work directly with several notable designers and architects including John Saladino of New York. This current body reflects forms of nature that inherently express structure, rhythm, balance, sequence and order. They are derivatives and mutations created out of an intense curiosity of marine biology, microbiology and chemistry. While heavily rooted in naturally occurring forms, the work is very much an interpretation based on my own aesthetic. |
